What Exactly Is Famanon?

Families Anonymous is a world-wide fellowship of family members and friends who have been affected by another's abuse of mind-altering substances or related behavioural problems. Fam Anon offer support groups gatherings, on a regular basis, throughout the country. Anyone, with even a slight suspicion of a substance abuse problem of a close one, is encouraged to come to the gatherings.

Fam Anon was established by a group of families in America in 1971. In 1980 the first group in London was founded now there are over 50 groups holding meetings in various parts of the country.

The fellowship is first formulated by Alcoholic Anonymous and is a self-help organisation with a programme based on the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions.

How Can It Help?

The group's goal is to support families and friends of persons with the present, potential or past drug related issues by offering mutual support and a place to share experiences and concerns. Group members learn how to adjust, cope, encourage and support loved ones under the influence of addiction.

Experience has shown that help for the drug-dependent person means help for the family and friends.

Group gatherings enable members to have an honest and steady relationship with the addict. Understanding that addict requires help to function without the substance is usually the realisation members come to.
